american dream of the 1950'sThe American Dream of the 1950's was the first time the dream began to deviate from its origins in the 1930's. In the 50's, the American Dream began to include more parts. Instead of just pertaining to the white picket fence suburban house, perfect children, and a steady marriage and life, the American Dream began to include a dog and televisions in each room of the house. The house would also have a nice kitchen and a well-trimmed yard. The dream embodied the show "Happy Days," with perfect children and a perfect family. The American Dream was affected by the futurism and opportunity that had arisen from the post-WWII era, but the backbone of the dream still remained in family values and hard work.

Department of LaborThe primary key to the advancement of the American Dream was the ability of the labor force in the United States to meet the increasing demands of the new consumer economy. The federal government established the Department of Labor to aid the work force, and this government page covers the expansion of the American Dream during the 1950's.
